Winter Internship Reports

This page will be updated as I get my winter internships.

The first one will be at CBC Radio Ottawa as associate producer with Bandwidth and Tempo from December 12 – 23, 2011.  Just in case you were wondering, the photo in the feature box above is from the Cloisters location of the Metropolitian Museum of Art in New York City. I was there during Reading Week in February 2011.

I’ve really enjoyed my first week at CBC – I’ve been working with Amanda Putz of Bandwidth.  She’s a warm, witty and very outspoken lady – and has been helpful with constructive criticism and encouragement.  I will be working with the Tempo team during my second week, mostly logging pieces in the shared music library that all of the CBC stations can access.  Julie Nesrallah is as warm as she sounds on-air.

If you listen in on Bandwidth, CBC Radio One (on Ontario streams except for Toronto), at 5 pm EST Christmas eve, you will hear a holiday version of Bandwidth – including a little phone interview I did with Carl Berger of the vocal group Cadence.  That’s the same group that I did a cd review for during the December 11 edition of the Algonquin Show on CKDJ.

If you’re in Ottawa, please listen to Bandwidth at 5 pm on 91.5 FM.  It’s a great show anyway, whether Amanda has interns like Rosanna (who was on the December 17th show), myself or if Amanda is riding solo.  She is a great host.  Also, Amanda does a Thursday morning column on Ottawa Morning at 8:15 am.  She basically does a tee-up of musical events for the weekend.  If you’re in the Ottawa area, it’s a must-listen.

Update: Internship number Two – not discounting that I’m still working at CKDJ and AIR as Creative Director, Traffic Manager, Creative Writer, Producer and on-air personality (Stoke the Folk (Mondays 9 pm), CKDJ Monday Morning show (Mondays 6-9 am), AIR Algonquin (Tuesdays 6-8 pm, Saturdays 6 -9 am) and CKDJ drive (Thursdays 3:30 – 5 pm).

The Internship is at CKCU! I will be working in Creative and Production on Wednesdays until the end of the semester. I will post updates when I know more. While I know CKCU well as a host, this will be a whole other side that I’ve not experienced. I just didn’t have the physical energy to be on a promotions team, although I would dearly love to work at Newcap. We’ll see what the future unfolds!

CKCU Internship

So far (as of February 12, 2012) I have written and produced three ads for CKCU as well as a PSA for Out of the Cold.  I am at CKCU on Wednesdays (although I have been encouraged by one of my professors that I need to get into a commercial station writing ads for a few weeks while I can).  We’ll see what unfolds in this extremely busy season.

Here is some of my work at CKCU (I won’t post them all):

Update – December 10, 2012

It’s nearly a year from when I had my CBC Internship.  I continue to produce as a volunteer at CKCU, as well as host Window of Opportunity and Over My Head.   In April, I was hired by Newcap Radio in Ottawa as a board operator.  While it is an entry level position, it is an important one, and I have learned a lot.  It’s a great radio company, and this group of two stations is extremely creative and top-notch in what they do.  I am so pleased to be there.

Thanks for reading!

  1. IdeaMarketers Be sincere when posting and keep your marketing to a minimal.

  2. Fantastic blog! Do you have any hints for aspiring writers? I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you advise starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m completely overwhelmed .. Any recommendations? Cheers!
